Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for vehicle loading crane operations
   • Access, interpret and apply crane operation documentation and procedures and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Identify and implement signage and barricade requirements
   • Identify, select and check for faults, equipment to carry out tasks
   • Perform pre-start, start-up, park-up, shutdown and vehicle positioning procedures
   • Communicate with person dogging the load to ensure quantity of load in accordance with specifications, vehicle limitations and/or rigging requirements
   • Communicate with Dogman to ensure attachments are correctly assembled and dismantled
   • Determine and implement no-go zones, confirm work area is clear and identify and control crane operating hazards prior to the commencement of the lift
2. Operate and maintain a loading crane
   • Lift and position loads using crane controls and function
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity including using recommended load moving signals
   • Monitor load and crane hook movements and locations throughout the transfer
   • Identify and respond to emergency situations
   • Identify and control crane operating hazards and respond to monitoring systems and alarms
   • Complete work, shut down crane and return to its lock down position
3. Carry out operator maintenance
   • Perform daily/shift vehicle inspections and fault-finding checks
   • Perform and record in writing routine operational servicing and report any faults
   • Process written records
   • Record in writing the results of daily/shift inspections, and report any defects
4. Clean up
   • Clear work area and dispose of reused or recycled materials
   • Clean, check and store plant, tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of vehicle loading crane operation including:

planning and preparing for vehicle loading crane operations

performing daily and shift vehicle inspections and fault finding checks

identifying and establishing no-go zones in the vicinity of vehicle loading cranes

selecting and using relevant tools and equipment

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the operation of a vehicle loading crane that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communication techniques and equipment to convey information to others

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

demonstrates completion of operating a vehicle loading crane that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

performing pre-start, start-up, park-up, shutdown and vehicle positioning procedures

lifting and positioning loads or personnel using crane controls and function

directing crane operations using load moving signals

monitoring load and crane hook movements and locations

disposing of environmentally sensitive fluids and materials

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when operating a vehicle loading crane:

never work under crane booms

crane hook location and movement

Relevant standards related to loading cranes and lifting

site and equipment safety requirements

vehicle equipment characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations associated with loading cranes

basic geological and survey data knowledge relating to loading cranes

basic rigging and slinging requirements

hand and whistle signals related to loading crane operations

site environmental requirements and constraints

crane preparation and operational techniques

processes for the calculation of load mass requirements

plans, drawings and specifications

safe handling and storage procedures

relevant acts, regulations and code of practice
